From Concept to Conservation at Scale: Partnership Creates New Space for Kenya's Rhinos

Kenya Wildlife Service, Kenya Rhino Range Expansion and San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance mark 18 months of partnership that has helped turn an ambitious concept into action, expanding habitat for rhinos while creating opportunities for communities, conservation and tourism

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct. 27, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Eighteen months ago, Kenya Rhino Range Expansion (KRRE) was an ambitious idea: to help create the space, partnerships and investment needed for Kenya's growing rhino populations to continue to thrive. Today, that idea is delivering results on the ground.

With catalytic support from San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance (SDZWA), KRRE has grown from a concept into an operational initiative working alongside the Kenya Wildlife Service, communities, conservation organisations, and private landowners to help expand and strengthen rhino habitat across Kenya.

In just 18 months, this work has helped contribute to several significant milestones. In Tsavo, the opening of the largest rhino sanctuary in Africa has given the region's black rhino population access to approximately 30 times more space than they had previously. In Central Kenya, more than ten partners have committed to opening their properties to support the expansion of rhino populations. And in the Naibunga Community Conservancy, with support from a collection of organizations including KRRE, work is underway to restore habitat for future rhino conservation that will improve grazing for livestock and create the potential for new tourism and employment opportunities.

Together, these efforts represent an important next chapter in one of Africa's great conservation success stories.

Under the vision and leadership of the Kenya Wildlife Service, the country has made remarkable progress in rebuilding its rhino populations. But that success has created a new challenge. Several established rhino areas are reaching or exceeding their ecological carrying capacity, making additional secure habitat critical if populations are to continue growing.

SDZWA was among the earliest partners to recognise both the urgency of the challenge and the potential of KRRE and KWS's approach to helping solve it. Its catalytic funding helped establish the team, technical capacity and other partnerships needed to take KRRE from planning to implementation.

Creating space in Tsavo
One of the most significant milestones came in September with the final fence dropping for the expanded Tsavo West Rhino Sanctuary. Covering approximately 3,200 square kilometres, it is now the largest rhino sanctuary of its kind in Africa and has increased the space available to Tsavo West's black rhino population by approximately 30 times. KRRE has worked alongside the Kenya Wildlife Service and other partners to support the wider effort, including ear notching of nearly 70% of the 200 rhinos in Tsavo West, investments in ranger mobility, monitoring, communications, infrastructure and other operational requirements needed to protect rhinos across a vastly larger landscape.

The expansion is about more than simply creating additional space. Larger landscapes allow for natural dispersal and improved genetic resilience that give rhinos a greater opportunity to establish healthy breeding populations, while strengthening protection for the wider ecosystem and other wildlife that share the same habitat.

Building the next generation of rhino landscapes
In Central Kenya, KRRE is helping lay the groundwork for the next phase of rhino expansion. More than fourteen partners have now signed agreements committing to work towards opening their properties to expanding rhino populations. Together, these landscapes have the potential to create significant new space for rhinos while strengthening connectivity across one of Kenya's most important wildlife areas.

In Naibunga Community Conservancy, KRRE is working in partnership with the community to restore and enhance the landscape through the removal of invasive plant species. This initiative contributes to a healthy, productive and resilient ecosystem that supports the well-being of communities and wildlife, while also enhancing the landscape's potential to support rhino conservation in the future. Any consideration of rhino conservation as part of the landscape's future land-use options will be undertaken through an inclusive and participatory F-PIC process, ensuring that community aspirations, priorities, knowledge and decisions are central to shaping the way forward.

It is an example of the wider opportunity at the heart of KRRE's approach: using rhino conservation as a catalyst for healthier landscapes and stronger local economies.

Rhinos as a catalyst
KRRE was established on the understanding that expanding rhino range cannot be achieved by any single organisation. Its role is to work alongside the organisations and people already managing Kenya's landscapes, helping identify opportunities, convene partners, provide technical expertise and direct funding towards projects that can unlock additional habitat.

That means looking beyond the immediate requirements of rhino conservation to the wider systems that make expansion possible: healthy habitat, effective protection, strong community partnerships, science, infrastructure, sustainable tourism and long-term financing.

By investing early in an organisation designed to identify opportunities and connect partners, SDZWA's support has helped unlock work that now stretches from the vast landscapes of Tsavo to community and private conservancies in Central Kenya.
