Fulbright Scholar Awarded to The Chicago School Of Professional Psychology and Harold Washington College

Scholar from Rwanda Will Bring Expertise on the Effect of Violence on Youth and Healing from Trauma

CHICAGO, May 11 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Fulbright Scholar program has awarded a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence grant to The Chicago School of Professional Psychology (TCSPP) and Harold Washington College (HWC), one of the City Colleges of Chicago, to bring scholar Jeanne-Marie Ntete from Rwanda to Chicago for the fall 2010 and spring 2011 terms. The Chicago-based institutions developed an innovative partnership in internationalization in order to realize this notable award.

"It is indeed an honor to share this Fulbright grant with Harold Washington College," said Dr. Carroll Cradock, president of the Chicago Campus of TCSPP. "Jeanne-Marie Ntete brings a global view and unique experience that will broaden the perspective and learning experience at both institutions."  

Based at the National University of Rwanda, Ntete's work has centered on post-traumatic stress disorder and healing for those impacted by the violence that occurred during Rwanda's 1994 genocide in which approximately one million of the country's 10 million people were killed in ethnic conflicts. She will work with Dr. Nancy Dubrow, director of the Center for International Studies and associate professor at TCSPP, and Dr. Sammie Dortch, chair of the Applied Science Department at HWC, to teach undergraduate courses in child development and social work; to develop on and off campus colloquia; and to produce a scholarly publication on "The Effect of Violence on Children and Youth from Chicago to Rwanda." Ntete will also participate in the annual meeting of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies.

Ntete's history of working with genocide survivors, knowledge of their needs and familiarity with Rwandan culture will also provide valuable insight for two of The Chicago School of Professional Psychology's major international initiatives focused on Africa. The first is the school's recently launched trauma healing program in Rwanda, designed to assist elementary and secondary school teachers in addressing students' post-genocide trauma. Additionally, TCSPP has plans to open a Center for African Psychological Studies in Washington, D.C., in the near future.
