Fungal Meningitis Lawsuits Make Headlines Across Country

HOUSTON, Oct. 19, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Recent outbreaks of Fungal Meningitis have been making headlines as the CDC confirmed that a steroid has been linked to the development of the fungus. The contaminated steroid injection has been given to patients in at least 15 states. Research has shown that the cases have developed from tainted vials of methylprednisolene acetate that have been traced back to the New England Compounding Center (NECC). The steroid injections were being given to patients who were suffering from lower back pain. There have also been peripheral infections including the knee, hip, shoulder and elbow when the steroid injection was administered to other locations to treat localized pain.

The potentially contaminated injections were given starting May 21, 2012 and are in three specific lots: #05212012@68, BUD 11/17/2012, #06292012@26, BUD 12/26/2012 & #08102012@51, BUD 2/6/2013

Claims are beginning to be filed as patients and their families are beginning to feel the symptoms of the fungus, Exserohilum, and seek to gain compensatory and punitive damages to cover medical costs and emotional damage. One additional specimen tested positive for the fungus Aspergillus, further increasing the concern of widespread contamination from the preservative-free steroids.

The CDC has advised that any products from the NECC not be used and is currently investigating the center that is believed to have been the source of the tainted medication. The CDC currently shows 247 cases with 19 confirmed deaths as of October 18th, 2012. These numbers are likely to rise as more patients come forward reporting their side effects.
