Georgia School of Orthodontics Welcomes Class of 2021
18 new residents to enter three-year residency program
ATLANTA, Sept. 24, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The Georgia School of Orthodontics (GSO) is pleased to welcome a new class of residents to its highly regarded 36-month Residency Program. GSO enrolls 18 dentists each year and offers advanced orthodontic education to those who have completed an accredited dental school in the U.S. or an equivalent foreign dental school. The School now has 54 dentists and 2 fellows receiving orthodontic training at its two Atlanta-area campuses, making it the largest orthodontic residency program in the nation.
"The Class of 2021 represents a well-diversified group of highly driven dentists who have successfully met stringent requirements," said Dr. Ricky Harrell, GSO program director.
GSO's new residents are educated by a leading orthodontic faculty that includes Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO), and world-renowned researchers.
"Our two patient clinics provide state-of-the-art technology and also offer exceptional orthodontic care to children and adults throughout metro Atlanta," said Dr. Harrell. "With 54 resident dentists and over 15 orthodontic specialists, we can treat an unprecedented number of patients. We are also very proud to be able to provide increased access to orthodontic care to patients that otherwise may not be able to afford braces through the complimentary care programs we offer," he added.
In addition to its commitment to provide savings to the Atlanta community, GSO also gives back to its students by offering scholarships to its first, second, and third-year residents.
GSO providing nearly $1.4 million in scholarships for its Residency Program
The Georgia School of Orthodontics is proud to provide several merit-based scholarships to qualified residents including:
- Doctor Gasper Lazzara Scholarship for Diversity in the Field of Orthodontics
Established to support the resident training of minority students pursuing careers in orthodontics. The Scholarship is name after GSO's Board of Trustees Member Dr. Gasper Lazzara, who has worked tirelessly throughout his career to promote diversity and accessibility in the orthodontic field and in his local community. To date, this full-tuition Scholarship has been awarded to a total of three recipients for a total amount of $577,500.
- Doctor Melvin S. Polk Professional Integrity & Academic Achievement Scholarship
This faculty-nominated Scholarship honors Interim Program Director Dr. Melvin Polk, who was instrumental in GSO's establishment. It is awarded to residents who exhibit exceptional merit, commitment to helping others, professional conduct and further the quality of education, intellectual life, and mission of the School. To date, this Scholarship has been awarded to a total of eight recipients for a total amount of $100,000. The following recipients were presented with this scholarship at a special ceremony earlier this month: Dr. Bridgette Jones Brooks, Class of 2020; Dr. Daniel Cho, Class of 2020; Dr. Brooke Howard, Class of 2019, and Dr. Serena Jacob, Class of 2019.
- Doctor Nathaniel Glover Leadership & Professional Scholarship
This merit-based scholarship honors Dr. Nathaniel Glover, a member of the GSO Board of Trustees, who has exhibited extraordinary leadership, professionalism and dedication. The scholarship recognizes the orthodontic education of outstanding second-year and third-residents who support the exceptional clinical care provided to GSO's patients and assist the School's faculty, staff, and residents with clinical duties as Teaching Assistants. To date, this Scholarship has been awarded to a total of four recipients for a total amount of $50,000. The following recipients were presented with this scholarship at a special ceremony earlier this month: Dr. Keith Blankenship, Class of 2020; Dr. Bridgette Jones Brooks, Class of 2020; Dr. Nancy Lin, Class of 2019, and Dr. Dave Martin, Class of 2020.
- Georgia School of Orthodontics Inaugural Class Scholarship
This scholarship was awarded to all residents of the School's first class of orthodontic residents which included 18 recipients for all three years for a total amount of $648,000.
Since GSO's inception the School has awarded a total of $1,375,500 in scholarship funds to its residents.
