Global Xylene capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the next nine years, potentially increasing to 81.1 mtpa in 2026. Around 35 planned and announced projects are slated to come online in the next nine years, primarily in Asia and the Middle East. In Asia, China has nine planned and announced xylene projects, with a total capacity of about 9.3 mtpa by 2020 with capex for these projects being close to US$7.55 billion. Major capacity additions will be from China Petrochemical Corp.
In the Middle East, Iran has four planned and announced xylene projects, expected to start operations with a total capacity of about 1.5 mtpa by 2021. Capital expenditure (capex) for these projects totals US$1.33 billion over the next nine years. Major capacity additions will be from Mokran Aroma Shimi Iran.
In the Former Soviet Union, majority of xylene capacity additions are in Russia, with capacity of about 0.3 mtpa by 2018. Whereas, in Europe, Spain plans to spend US$0.04 billionand add a capacity of 0.07 mtpa, expected to come on-stream by 2018.
China Petrochemical Corp, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd and Kuwait Petroleum Corporation are the top three companies by planned capacity additions globally over the next nine years. Reliance Industries Ltd, China Petrochemical Corp and Exxon Mobil Corporation are the top global producers of xylene in 2017.
