The annual study is based upon responses from 1,200 IT security decision makers and practitioners from 17 countries and 19 industries and provides a 360-degree view of organizations' security threats, current defenses and planned investments.
This year, the report identified a lack of skilled personnel as being IT security's greatest inhibitor to success, which trumped low security awareness amongst employees as the primary inhibitor for the first time in five years. In fact, four in five organizations globally are experiencing an IT security skills shortage in 2018.
Security practitioners also identified the inability to reduce the organizations' attack surface as being one of the most challenging internal IT security functions, second only to the development and testing of security applications. "The ever-increasing sophistication of cyberthreats, rise of targeted attacks and dissolution of a well-defined perimeter all but guarantees some number of threats will gain access to the enterprise network," says Steve Piper, Co-Founder and CEO of CyberEdge Group. Unfortunately, the growing attack surface combined with a skills and personnel shortage is a recipe for disaster, often requiring IT security teams to do more with less and to prioritize security initiatives over others of equal importance. Industries such as Healthcare and Financial Services are especially impacted by these challenges and are highly targeted by external cyberthreats, as hackers stand to gain the most from accessing sensitive Patient Health Information (PHI) and financial data. These industries are also using an increasing amount of IoT devices to ultimately deliver a better customer experience. Unfortunately, these devices are often not associated with a single user and/or cannot be managed by traditional security software, making them prime points of entry in a cyberattack.
