Guggenheim Museum Presents Wang Jianwei: Time Temple, New Works by the First Commissioned Artist for The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Chinese Art Initiative
NEW YORK, Oct. 30, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum presents new work by Wang Jianwei, an influential Beijing-based artist noted for his bold conceptual practice and decades-long contributions to the Chinese avant-garde. Wang Jianwei: Time Temple, the artist's first solo museum exhibition in the United States, will be on view from October 31, 2014 to February 16, 2015.
A multi-part exhibition influencing the notion of art-making as a rehearsal, Time Temple explores the experience of space and time through a series of large-scale paintings and sculptures that exemplify the artist's practice of working across media, a live performance titled Spiral Ramp Library, and screenings of The Morning Time Disappeared, a new film inspired by Franz Kafka's classic 1915 novella The Metamorphosis. The exhibition is accompanied by a series of public programs, including a conversation with the artist and Mandarin-language gallery tours. Time Temple is the first of three commission-based exhibitions realized through The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Chinese Art Initiative at the Guggenheim Museum, which explores the ideas and works of artists from China, who are shaping contemporary art within a global context. The commissioned works will enter the museum's permanent collection as The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Collection. The exhibition is organized by Thomas J. Berghuis, The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Curator of Chinese Art, with Stephanie Kwai, Assistant Curator, Asian Art, as part of the Guggenheim Museum's Asian Art Initiative, which is under the direction of Alexandra Munroe, Samsung Senior Curator, Asian Art.
