EAST HAMPTON, N.Y., July 10, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Guild Hall of East Hampton (June 12) – The Hamptons Institute returns with a weekend symposium consisting of five (5) sessions over Saturday and Sunday, July 21 and 22. Conversations feature prominent commentators and thought leaders on a diverse range of topical issues, including the economy, global women's rights, urban development, politics, and authenticating art. All events are presented by Guild Hall in collaboration with the Roosevelt Institute.
"Our goal is to present a spectrum of perspectives concerning today's most pressing challenges and foster new ideas and potential solutions," said Mickey Strauss, Chair, Guild Hall Board of Trustees.
"As part of our work to reanimate progressive thought, we are pleased to help bring together some of the day's top minds with differing points of view to tackle the big issues our country faces," said Felicia Wong, President and CEO, Roosevelt Institute.
The symposium kicks off with "Perspectives on New York as a 21st Century City" with Paul Goldberger, Pulitzer Prize-winning architecture critic and writer for Vanity Fair, moderating a panel with Robert Hammond, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Friends of the High Line; Leslie Koch, President of The Trust for Governors Island; Joe Rose, Partner of the Georgetown Group and former Chairman of the New York City Planning Commission and Director of the Department of City Planning under Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani. "2012 Politics and Policy Scorecard: A Bipartisan Conversation" features Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and a Republican colleague discussing the "state of play" of the 2012 election and opportunities for bipartisanship. "Women Rising in the World: Implications for Global Peace and Prosperity" has Kati Marton, bestselling author and human rights activist, discussing women as peacemakers and drivers of prosperity with 2011 Nobel Laureate Leymah Gbowee, a Liberian peace activist responsible for leading a women's peace movement that brought an end to the Second Liberian Civil War in 2003, and Dina Powell, President of the Goldman Sachs Foundation and Global Head of Corporate Engagement. "America's Economic Future: A Bipartisan Conversation" features Joe Nocera, Op-Ed columnist for The New York Times, discussing the future of the American economy with Emil Henry, Managing Partner and Managing Director of Tiger Infrastructure and Former Assistant Secretary of Financial Institutions, U.S. Treasury Department under George W. Bush, and Cyrus Amir-Mokri, the current Assistant Secretary for Financial Institutions, U.S. Treasury Department under President Obama. The Pollock/Krasner House & Study Center Annual Lecture focuses on "Forensic Connoisseurship, Jackson Pollock, and the Authentic Eye" with Francis V. O'Connor, Ph.D. Against a backdrop of multi-million dollar lawsuits and tarnished reputations, Dr. O'Connor will dissect the fine art of authenticating fine art. The foremost expert on Jackson Pollock, co-editor of the artist's Catalogue Raisonne, and a former member of the now-defunct Pollock-Krasner Authentication Board, he is uniquely qualified to expose the inner workings of this arcane and often controversial process.
Inaugurated in 2010, the Hamptons Institute is dedicated to presenting a range of intellectual and professional perspectives on the most challenging issues confronting our country and the world. Its aim is to engage in thoughtful debate and deliberation on concerns to which we may bring differing points of view around subjects that range from economics and business to politics and public policy, from arts and culture, to the role of the media.
