Halcyon Incubator Sets Milestones in Announcement of Third Class
WASHINGTON, June 16, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Halcyon Incubator, the nation's premier incubator for social entrepreneurs, today announced its third cohort of fellows featuring game-changing solutions to some of the world's greatest challenges. From using mobile phones to track medical supplies to wedding registries for social good, the newest cohort of the Halcyon Incubator is developing innovative ideas focused on impact.
After one year in operation, the Halcyon Incubator, a program of S&R Foundation, put an emphasis on opening pathways for female social entrepreneurs to apply to the program in an effort to help close the gender gap. This initiative saw remarkable results; the number of women who applied to the program increased by 113%.

Starting in September, the Halcyon Incubator fellows will take part in an immersive program that provides them with the time, space, and resources needed to springboard and scale their ventures. Fellows receive rent-free housing and office space at the historic Halcyon House, a living stipend, mentors, complimentary strategic, legal and PR resources, as well as access to potential funders from a variety of sectors. The Halcyon Incubator does not take equity in the fellows' ventures.
The third class of fellows and their ventures are as follows:
Kate Glantz – Heartful.ly – Heartful.ly is a wedding registry platform for social good. By partnering with nonprofit organizations in the U.S. and around the world, Heartful.ly connects engaged couples and their families and friends to essential community development projects while replicating the experience of a traditional gift registry.
Daniel Yu – Reliefwatch – Reliefwatch is a platform for organizations in the developing world to track essential supplies through basic mobile phones. Already launched in three countries with over 18 million units of medical supplies tracked to date, Reliefwatch is now expanding to four new countries across Africa and the Americas.
Sara Minkara – Empowerment Through Integration – Empowerment Through Integration provides the emotional support necessary to bring out the potential of blind youth, empowering them to become authors of their futures and change makers in their society. Empowerment Through Integration achieves this through an integrated summer camp of blind and sighted youth followed by a social project.
Derrick Hosea – ONELAMP – ONELAMP Express is a same day last-mile clean energy delivery service that enables off-grid households to order solar lights by mobile SMS and enjoy door-to-door delivery using an existing transportation network. ONELAMP Express targets 85 million people living without electricity access in East Africa.
Vedette Gavin and Derwin Dubose – New Majority Community Labs – New Majority Community Labs is empowering communities of color to identify and solve their own challenges using big data and community engagement tools. NMCL recruits and trains residents to gather data about their communities, share it with their neighbors, and launch community-derived and funded solutions to their civic challenges.
Sage Salvo – Words Liive – Words Liive is a 21st century education technology firm dedicated to literacy augmentation. Words Liive creatively engages students though Contemporary Language Integration, a process of incorporating urban music lyrics, social media lingo, and computer programming languages into classroom lessons. Currently in beta, the Words Liive app creates a marketplace for lesson plans and gives teachers the opportunity to earn ancillary income.
Charlie Gillig and Patrick Aylward – RemitRight – RemitRight is a real-time comparison mobile and web platform for remittances. The company brings transparency and competition to the notoriously opaque remittance industry, making it simple for immigrants to make informed choices and send more money to the people who count on them.
Philip Wong – MISFIT Juicery – MISFIT Juicery makes cold-pressed juice out of fruits and vegetables that would otherwise go to waste either because they are excess or don't meet the high aesthetic standards of commercial retailers. In doing so, MISFIT Juicery is changing the discourse around food waste and what is ugly and what is beautiful in the United States.
The application process for the fourth cohort of Halcyon Incubator fellows will open in August 2015.
