ROCKVILLE, Md., Oct. 24, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- There's no trick to this treat. Halloween has become a thriving food gifting occasion for adults in America, according to Food Gifting in the U.S., 5th Edition, a report by market research firm Packaged Facts, which also recently released a new Halloween chocolate candy trend infographic.
By food gifting occasion, the winter holidays are a food gifting mainstay: almost half of adults who have purchased food gifts for others have done so for the winter holidays, while about a third of those who have purchased food gifts for themselves have done so for these holidays. Birthdays and Valentine's Day are also very popular food gifting occasions.
But Halloween is gaining ground as evidenced by fang-tastic marketing by food gift companies such as Cookies by Design and GourmetGiftBaskets.com. Further, Packaged Facts found that among food gift purchasers, 18% have purchased for themselves during Halloween, while 24% have purchased Halloween food gifts for someone else. These percentages are either on par with or surpass other notable food gift occasions including Thanksgiving, anniversaries, weddings, housewarmings, and graduations.
"Sure adults have opportunities to play dress up and socialize during Halloween, but the kids have most of the fun—or at least most of the candy," says David Sprinkle, research director Packaged Facts. "Food gifting has become a fun way for many adults to treat themselves and others."
Beyond purchases by individuals, food gift bought for business associates is also a lucrative and active segment of the market. Some 41% of employed (full-time or part-time) respondents say they had received a food gift in connection with their employment within the last 12 months. Employment-related events are the most common occasions for receiving food gifts, as are potentially overlapping occasions such as company Christmas parties or birthdays. But Halloween again has proven its popularity, ranking 6th on Packaged Facts' list of 15 business-related occasions for which food gifts were received.
