HelloNation Article Explains How to Protect Concrete From Winter Salt Damage, Featuring Concrete Experts Ray McDougall and Mitch Wilkinson

The article explains how salt, moisture, and freeze-thaw cycles affect concrete and how protective coatings can help reduce damage.

CLARENCE, N.Y., Oct. 12, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- What causes concrete floors to break down so quickly during harsh Western New York winters? HelloNation answers that question in an article featuring insights from Concrete Experts Ray McDougall and Mitch Wilkinson of Executive Concrete Coatings in Clarence, New York.

The HelloNation article explains how winter weather can significantly affect concrete surfaces, particularly in regions where snow, road salt, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles are common. It notes that garages, entryways, patios, and other exposed concrete surfaces face constant stress throughout the colder months, making long-term protection an important consideration for homeowners.

According to the article, road salt is one of the leading contributors to winter concrete damage. When salt combines with melting snow, moisture is carried into the naturally porous surface of concrete. As temperatures drop, the trapped moisture freezes and expands, placing pressure on the concrete that can eventually lead to cracking, scaling, and surface deterioration.

The article explains that professionally installed coating systems help address this problem by creating a protective barrier that limits the penetration of moisture and salt. Epoxy coatings paired with durable polyaspartic top coats help shield concrete from seasonal exposure while providing a surface that is easier to maintain throughout the winter.

Timing also plays an important role in protecting concrete. The article notes that applying coatings before winter arrives helps seal the surface before exposure to harsh weather begins. While damaged concrete can often be repaired and coated later, additional surface preparation may be necessary to ensure proper adhesion and long-term performance.

Another point discussed in the article is how protective coatings help reduce moisture intrusion that contributes to visible cracking. While no coating can prevent natural movement within a concrete slab, limiting the amount of water entering the surface reduces the freeze-thaw pressure that often accelerates deterioration in colder climates.

The article also highlights practical advantages beyond structural protection. Coated concrete surfaces are easier to clean because snow, slush, road salt, and dirt remain on the surface instead of soaking into the concrete. This can help reduce staining and discoloration while making routine maintenance more manageable during the winter months.

For homeowners throughout Western New York, the article explains that untreated concrete commonly develops pitting, scaling, and surface wear after repeated exposure to winter conditions. Protective coating systems designed for freeze-thaw environments can help extend the life of concrete while maintaining a cleaner, more attractive appearance over time.

The HelloNation article also emphasizes that not every coating system performs equally under demanding seasonal conditions. Proper installation and the selection of materials designed for cold-weather durability are important factors in achieving reliable, long-lasting results. Systems that combine a strong base coat with a durable polyaspartic finish are described as well suited for resisting the challenges created by winter weather.

Throughout the article, Concrete Experts Ray McDougall and Mitch Wilkinson provide insights that help readers understand why proactive protection is often more effective than waiting until visible damage occurs. Their experience offers practical context for homeowners looking to preserve the appearance and durability of their concrete surfaces through years of seasonal exposure.

The article concludes that protecting concrete before winter weather arrives can help reduce long-term deterioration caused by salt, moisture, and freezing temperatures. Understanding how modern coating systems perform allows homeowners to make informed decisions about preserving their concrete surfaces for years to come.
