Help Fight Medicare Fraud with Two Digital Tools

WASHINGTON, Sept. 22, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Fighting Medicare fraud is everyone's business. That's the message that the Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) wants older adults and caregivers to remember this September, which is National Healthcare Fraud Prevention and Awareness Month. And to help, download two free mobile applications from the SMP Resource Center.

SMP Fraud Busters is an interactive, educational game designed to teach users how to prevent, detect, and report healthcare fraud and scams. Players navigate a "day in the life" of a person encountering phone, email, and in-person scams, all while earning badges and exposing fraudsters. "This is a great way to protect people using Medicare," one player said, adding, "I feel better informed, safer."

The SMP Medicare Tracker app offers a way to help people with Medicare to track what happens at medical appointments. Comparing these details to what appears on their claims and bills can help prevent and detect fraud, errors, or abuse. The app also gives users information and news on the latest scams and a way to report possible fraud.

"A lot of people don't realize that protecting your Medicare information is as important as protecting your bank cards or Social Security number," said Brandy Bauer, director of the SMP Resource Center. "These two apps can help you discover how keep your Medicare identity secure and have fun learning how to stop fraudsters in their tracks."

Both SMP Fraud Busters and the SMP Medicare Tracker can be downloaded for free from Apple and Google Play stores, or by visiting smpresource.org/app.

With programs in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, SMP provides free, unbiased one-on-one assistance to Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers. Local SMP team members help people identify potential fraud, review billing concerns, and report suspected scams to the appropriate agencies.
