Heritage of Kalamazoo Finalizes 13.35-Acre Land Purchase for Luxury Development in Texas Township
The Halstead, a new 55-plus active adult community will bring hybrid villa living, with priority reservations beginning Aug. 20.
KALAMAZOO, Mich., Aug. 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Heritage Community of Kalamazoo announces the purchase of 13.35 acres of land in Texas Township for $1.2 million, where it plans to develop The Halstead, a new 55-plus active adult community.
The Halstead by Heritage Community of Kalamazoo will bring upscale villa homes to the market, designed around a newer housing concept: hybrid living. These hybrid villas will combine the convenience of apartment-style living, with the space of a townhome design. Phase one of community development is anticipated to include 60 villas, with the potential for a total of up to 105 in the future. Offering maintenance-free lifestyles and the room to live comfortably and actively, this unique entrance-fee development will offer retirees and soon-to-be retirees care for life should they need it later in life.
Emphasizing both luxury and sustainability, every villa home will be a corner unit and feature an open-concept layout with two bedrooms or two bedrooms plus a den, ranging from 1,400 to 2,200 square feet. The expansive floor plans will allow for abundant natural light and include high-end kitchens, energy-efficient appliances, premium finishes and modern design throughout.
"This marks the start of a meaningful new chapter for Heritage," said Julie Deppner, president & CEO of Heritage Community of Kalamazoo. "Since 1945, we've thoughtfully renovated and evolved our existing campus over the years but this marks the first time we're opening an entirely new, satellite community. With the introduction of The Halstead's hybrid villa homes, we're embracing a forward-thinking approach to living that reflects the needs of today's active, 55 and better adults."
The Halstead's priority program will launch on Aug. 20, offering prospective residents a range of incentives and benefits. Those who place a fully refundable $1,000 deposit will receive early access to floor plans, priority selection of home location ahead of the general public and preferred pricing. Priority members will also be invited to a number of member-only receptions, programs and seminars.
"People are retiring differently in 2025 and beyond," said Matt Shankle, vice president of marketing & business development at Heritage Community of Kalamazoo. "There are a lot of new ways to live active, healthy, engaged, independent lifestyles for longer periods of time, and The Halstead is part of that new frontier in retirement living."
Located just west of the Q Avenue and 8th Street intersection in the area known as Texas Corners, the new community will be surrounded by a thriving neighborhood, just steps from a range of amenities, shopping, and dining, and only seven miles from Heritage Community of Kalamazoo at 2300 Portage Street.
As a Life Plan Community, Heritage Community of Kalamazoo offers all levels of senior living – independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing and home care. The life care contract that guarantees care for residents will be part of The Halstead's entrance fee plan.
The Halstead is expected to open in 2028. For more information or to join the priority program, visit HeritageCommunity.com/Texas-Township or call (269) 238-0862.
