Hialeah Gardens Middle School Expands the Classroom with LearnFit Adjustable Standing Desks
Miami-Dade County Public School Provides Flexible, Hands-On Learning Environment
HIALEAH GARDENS, Fla., Jan. 24, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Students in Hialeah Gardens Middle School's Academy of Agriscience program are expanding the learning environment beyond the four walls of the classroom with the help of Ergotron's LearnFit®Adjustable Standing Desks. Agriscience is a unique elective offering at Hialeah Gardens that teaches students about the science of agriculture, and is one of many lesson applications of the LearnFit desks that allows students to actively participate in between the classroom and the school's farm.
Students participating in the Academy of Agriscience program will develop a variety of skills including small animal, and animal nutrition and leadership development. To help cultivate these skills, students have access to the school's farm, giving them the opportunity to take the lessons they learn in the classroom and apply them in real-time to gain first-hand experience. The farm at Hialeah Gardens Middle School offers students the chance to work with a variety livestock including chickens, rabbits, goats, cows and others to learn how to groom and prepare them for shows.
"With agriscience, there is only so much students can learn from their textbooks without tangible experience," said Yvette Rodriguez, agriscience teacher at Hialeah Gardens Middle School. "For instance, I will often bring the students out to the farm and give a demonstration. The flexibility of the LearnFit desks allows us to create an outdoor learning environment where students apply lessons from the classroom in practice outside in our farm. With the LearnFit desks, students can get actively involved while also having quick access to their textbooks, notebooks and other learning materials."
In addition to the flexibility the LearnFit desks bring to the school's agriscience class, Ms. Rodriguez has also observed other benefits from students using sit-stand desks. "In a larger class with almost 40 students, it's easier for students to get tired or off-task," explained Ms. Rodriguez. "The mobility and activity that the LearnFit desks provide the students has really helped with keeping them more attentive and on task during class."
Several studies have shown the positive effect of physical activity on student cognition.
