High 5 Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Electric warns homeowners of mold risks
The trusted Denver home service company reveals HVAC tips to safeguard families' health and protect homes from the dangerous fungus
DENVER, Sept. 5, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- High 5 Plumbing, Heating & Cooling & Electric, a family-owned and operated home service company serving residents in the greater Denver metropolitan area, is raising awareness during National Mold Awareness Month of the critical role efficient HVAC systems play in preventing mold growth and protecting indoor air quality.
"Mold is more than just a nuisance; it can be a health hazard," said Levi Torres, co-owner of High 5. "If left unchecked, it can trigger respiratory issues and allergies and cause costly damage to a home's infrastructure. But what most people don't realize is that your home's HVAC system is often the first line of defense in the fight against mold."
National Mold Awareness Month was established in 2010 after advocacy from mold allergy sufferers highlighted the need for greater awareness. September was selected because its mix of warm temperatures and high humidity creates the perfect conditions for mold growth.
Torres said that an efficient HVAC system regulates humidity, promotes proper air circulation and filters out particles that contribute to mold growth. By ensuring the HVAC system is running efficiently, homeowners are investing in their family's health and the safety of their homes.
He said there are several steps homeowners can take to ensure their heating and cooling systems are functioning well.
- Change air filters regularly. High-efficiency filters capture dust, mold spores and other allergens that fuel mold growth.
- Schedule regular HVAC maintenance. Annual inspections of heating and cooling systems ensure that they are running correctly and prevent standing water around drip pans and condensate lines from growing mold.
- Clean and inspect ductwork. If a home is more than 10 years old, Torres recommends having the ductwork cleaned every two to five years by certified professionals. Dust and debris in the ducts can harbor mold spores.
- Ensure vents are unobstructed. Vents that are blocked or poorly sealed can create stagnant air pockets, which encourage mold growth.
- Consider using UV lights or air purifiers. UV germicidal lights or whole-home purifiers installed in or around the HVAC system can kill mold and bacteria before they get a chance to circulate through the home.
"Mold prevention starts with awareness and proactive care," Torres said. "If you need help beyond basic care, you should consult a reputable HVAC expert to tackle maintenance and ductwork cleaning and repair. At High 5, it's our mission to give Denver homeowners the tools and resources they need to breathe easier."
