Click "order." It gets built, and shipped. Then simply unbox and move in. China's modular homes are now making their way to more than 160 countries and regions.

In the first half of 2026, China's modular building exports hit $2.79 billion, up 45% year on year. At Shenzhen ports alone, modular homes worth around $360 million were shipped overseas. These giant "packages" from China are crossing oceans and heading around the world.

So, how are these houses made?

At an intelligent construction industrial park in Longgang district, Shenzhen, more than 80 smart machines work together. A complete building module rolls off the production line every 20 minutes. Once it arrives at the construction site, it can be installed in just 30 minutes. This is MiC — modular integrated construction. Simply put, the building modules are made in a factory, shipped to site, and then assembled like Lego.

This Chinese smart-building solution is already going global.

In Australia, builder Tony ran the numbers. For camps in remote mining areas, Chinese modular homes cost around 30% less than building locally.

In the Philippines, Chinese modular solutions helped local developer RGJ Realty Corporation build a 12-story, fully furnished apartment building in just nine days.

Even Mohamed Alabbar, the developer behind the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, has taken notice of China's modular solution. He invited a Chinese firm to construct a 50-meter-tall residential building in the UAE, a deal valued at 125 million yuan.

Earlier this year, an American couple posted their unboxing video of a modular house on YouTube. It racked up 3.6 million views and sent China's modular homes viral overseas. Their 72-square-meter unit, ordered from China, shipped from a factory in Hebei province, transported across the ocean and installed on-site, all for under $30,000. It came with a bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. Just connect the utilities and it's ready to move in.

Behind it all is a fundamental shift: from selling products to selling full-system solutions. China isn't just exporting steel frames and wall panels, but rather an integrated solution that covers design, manufacturing, supply chains and project delivery. And what makes that possible?
