The release is the first live step in the advanced product discovery platform Hot Sphinx announced earlier this year. Shoppers are already using the filters to narrow broad searches to niche products from brands and sellers within preferred price ranges.

"Intersecting millions of products across all of their different product attributes is a steep technical undertaking," said a spokesperson for Hot Sphinx. "Implemented poorly, filtering and sorting can bring search to a crawl. Traditional algorithms proved too slow and too generic for our needs, so we built our filtering, ranking and sorting algorithms from the ground up for today's modern hardware."

That approach allows Hot Sphinx to add discovery tools without sacrificing speed. The majority of requests complete in less than 100 milliseconds for the full round trip, measured from request through response to rendered page.

The image filter lets shoppers distinguish between listing formats. Organic Hot Sphinx results appear as text links, while enhanced listings from sponsored sellers can include product images. Sponsorship does not determine organic search relevance.

Phase One establishes the foundation for a deeper second phase. Hot Sphinx has developed technology that identifies product characteristics across a large portion of its catalog, creating thousands of searchable attributes and facets plus hundreds of numeric specifications.
