How Financial Institutions Can Help Detect Human Trafficking

BROOKFIELD, Wis., Feb. 27, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Billions of transactions per day are managed by financial institutions. Yet it's the unique transactions surrounding some customers' accounts that could help financial services professionals serve as a key deterrent against human trafficking.

OnCourse Learning will host the free nationally-accredited webinar "How Financial Institutions Serve as Frontline Defense in Human Trafficking Detection" at noon (ET) March 20 featuring human trafficking survivor, author and social advocate Timea E. Nagy. She has trained professionals in more than 1,500 banks and financial institutions throughout North America, along with thousands of law enforcement officers.

Attendees for the live event will receive one CAMS credit toward their continuing education requirement. The webinar will be recorded and made available, but CAMS credit will only apply to those attending live on March 20.

Survivor's story

Nagy emigrated to Canada from Hungary in 1998. She was seeking employment as a nanny in Toronto. The people posing as potential employers turned out to be human traffickers, who held her captive for three months and forced her to work in the sex industry before she escaped.

Nagy will share her first-hand experience from a survivor's point of view. She also will discuss:

• Detection strategies through financial institutions and other red flags.
• How to identify various types of human trafficking and the related impact on victims.
• Steps to successfully manage or report a potential human trafficking incident.

"Human trafficking is the third-largest criminal enterprise in the world and generates an estimated $150 billion a year in profits," Nagy said. "There are 45.8 million people worldwide who are victims of this slavery today. We all have a role to play to eradicate this horrible crime in our lifetime."

Detection tips

Following red flags of financial transactions can provide key evidence to this problem. The biggest giveaway, Nagy said, is a person having no money in a bank account at the end of each day.

Transactions also can place the victim and trafficker in the same area and prove signs of a person being trafficked. Key lifestyle issues pointing to this crime include:

• Rarely spending money on food.
• Not traveling with any money despite having a job.
• Someone else carrying their identification.
• Not knowing the area they live and work in every day.
• Being unsure of a current address.

"When you find out where the money comes from, you find the victim," she said. "When you find out where the money goes, you find your trafficker."
