In HelloNation, Automotive Equipment Expert Brian Lockhart Explains How to Choose a Commercial Truck Tire Changer

The Article Reviews Clamping Range, Weight Capacity, and Setup Needs to Help Shops Avoid Downtime and Injury Risk.

TORRINGTON, Conn., Oct. 28, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- What should a shop look for in a commercial truck tire changer? The answer appears in a HelloNation article that was newly published for shop owners and service managers. The article walks through the specifications and setup details that matter before a purchase.

The article features insights from Automotive Equipment Expert Brian Lockhart of Automotive Service Equipment, a distributor of garage and auto shop equipment. It explains why the wheels a shop handles every day should guide the decision.

The HelloNation article notes that specifications printed on a sales brochure only tell part of the story. A machine chosen for its advertised size alone often falls short within the first year of heavy use.

The article describes rim clamping range as the first number to check, since truck and trailer wheels vary widely in diameter. A machine with too narrow a range may struggle with certain fleets, while a wider range gives a shop room to grow.

Wheel weight capacity is the next factor the article covers. Commercial truck wheels weigh far more than passenger car wheels, so the lifting mechanism needs enough power to move them safely. Overloading a machine also shortens its working life and raises repair costs over time.

Tire type matters as well, according to the article. Many shops service both tube-type and tubeless truck tires, especially fleets that pair older trailers with newer equipment. A versatile commercial truck tire changer should handle both without lengthy setup changes between jobs.

The article also reviews mounting and demounting tools, including bead breakers, mounting heads, and pressure controls. These parts should match the tire construction a shop services most often, such as reinforced sidewalls or unusual bead profiles.

For shops that handle large, stiff sidewalls, the article suggests a leverage-assist arm to reduce strain on technicians. It also compares pneumatic models, which are common in high-volume shops, with hydraulic changers that add force for oversized wheels.

Floor space is often overlooked during the buying process, the article says. Technicians need room to move large wheels safely around the machine, so shops should measure their bay dimensions before placing an order, not after delivery.

Electrical requirements can also catch shop owners off guard. Larger changers often need higher voltage or a dedicated circuit, and confirming the details with an electrician early can avoid delays once the equipment arrives.

The article adds that unloading and installation deserve planning. Many suppliers require a loading dock or forklift access, and some installations call for a rigging service to move the unit into place.

Warranty coverage and local service support can matter as much as price, according to the article. Waiting on backordered parts can stall a bay for days when problems come up unexpectedly.

Training is another point the article raises. Technicians used to passenger tire equipment may need instruction on handling larger, heavier truck wheels, and a short session during installation can prevent damage to tires and equipment.

The article closes with a simple summary. A shop should compare rim clamping range, maximum tire diameter, wheel weight capacity, and tube or tubeless compatibility, then confirm that the clamping system and mounting tools suit its wheel types.

That guidance gives shop owners a practical set of questions to bring to Automotive Equipment Experts and equipment suppliers before they place an order.
