In HelloNation, Mr. Phase Converter Jay Yuergens of New Berlin, WI, Explains How to Power Multiple Machines with One Phase Converter

NEW BERLIN, Wis., Oct. 20, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Is it possible to power multiple machines with one rotary or digital phase converter? According to a HelloNation article featuring Jay Yuergens of North America Phase Converter Co. in New Berlin, WI, the answer is yes, with the right planning. The article outlines key strategies for safely and effectively powering multiple machines using a single source of three-phase power.

Yuergens explains that while the idea might seem risky at first, it is a common and efficient solution for many workshops and small production facilities that don't have three-phase power available. The key to success lies in understanding the total electrical demand, managing startup surges, and choosing the correct type of phase converter.

The article highlights that powering multiple machines starts with evaluating total amp draw, not just horsepower. Each machine lists its running amps on its data plate or specification sheet. Adding up the amps for machines expected to run at the same time provides a more accurate picture of power demand. This total helps determine the appropriate size of the phase converter to ensure consistent delivery of three-phase power.

One of the most important factors Yuergens addresses is startup demand. Motors draw significantly more current when starting than when running. If multiple machines start up at once, this combined surge of inrush current can overwhelm an undersized system. The article recommends staggered startups as a simple but effective way to reduce this surge and avoid performance issues.

A rotary phase converter is often the preferred option for this setup. According to the article, a rotary phase converter is well-suited for powering multiple machines because it can handle variable loads and support machines starting and stopping at different times. As long as the total demand stays within capacity, this type of converter can run several tools at once without performance loss.

Proper circuit protection is also essential. Each machine should be connected to its own breaker or disconnect switch. This setup allows for easier troubleshooting and protects the rest of the shop if one machine experiences an issue. In addition, careful attention to wiring layout and sizing helps minimize voltage drop and supports stable operation throughout the system.

The article also emphasizes the importance of planning for growth. Many shops add equipment over time, and choosing a phase converter with extra capacity early on allows for expansion without needing a new system. This long-term thinking ensures the converter continues to deliver reliable three-phase power even as needs increase.

Powering multiple machines with one phase converter isn't about pushing limits; it's about balance, protection, and smart sizing. With careful planning, the system remains efficient, safe, and easy to maintain. Yuergens also notes that this approach keeps voltage characteristics consistent across machines, helping tools run more predictably and efficiently.
