Innovative Belgian Medical Device Launched: 'Bedalpatch' Gaining Momentum After Successful Capital Raise
Innovative 'ready to market' plaster can increase autonomy for hospital patients and can save time for hospital staff.

Five years ago David De Munter was hit with the genius idea to develop a new type of patch during his hospital treatment for cancer. The patch enables every patient with an intravenous catheter to take a shower independently. Shortly after, the product was patented worldwide. Today the company announces that a financing round with the Limburg investment company LRM and a consortium of private investors has been completed. Through the entry from these investors the industrial production for the patch is initiated, and the market launch is planned from autumn 2015 on.

According to creator and co-founder David De Munter the Bedalpatch has advantages for all parties: "Hospitals have an enormous benefit here: the use of such a plaster results in a significant cost reduction in terms of labor and materials. The patch also contributes to the daily hygiene of the patient. Less handling is needed to detach the catheter, which is in line with the recommendations for decreasing the risk of infections. Video
The story reads like a fairy tale: how something bad, a 23-year old man who was diagnosed with an advanced stage of cancer, can turn into something good, with the launch of an innovative healthcare product. Bedal finds its strength in the coalition with 2 co-founding partners, Alexander Van Damme and Falk Beerten, who turned the idea into a successful company supported by the IWT and FlandersCare. The University Hospital of Leuven and homecare organization Remedus were closely involved in the process of development of the patch. At this stage the company is investigating to develop derivate products.
