Is There Lead, Toxic Flame Retardants in Carnival and Holiday Beads?

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Nov. 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- In a new study the Ann Arbor-based Ecology Center will be releasing data on toxic chemicals contained in Mardi Gras and holiday beads as part of their ongoing research of hazardous substances in common consumer items.   Products tested include dozens of beads and throws gathered from the streets of New Orleans during Mardi Gras festivities.  The holiday garlands, which are a similar product, were purchased from national retailers this past month. Results will be released on Thursday December 5 at www.HealthyStuff.org.

Nearly 100 bead necklaces and garlands were tested for lead, cadmium, bromine (associated with brominated flame retardants); chlorine (indicating the presence of polyvinyl chloride, or PVC); and phthalates.  Such chemicals have been linked to birth defects, impaired learning, liver toxicity, premature births and early puberty in laboratory animals, among other serious health problems.

Full test results will be available to the public at www.HealthyStuff.org.  Also available will be common sense tips on how to avoid toxic chemicals during your celebrations.
