Jewellery & Gem Fair Freiburg: Where Business Meets Tradition

The UBM Jewellery & Gem Fair Group, with a total of 19 trade shows, in 9 countries and regions, is the largest and most experienced organisers of jewellery and gem fairs around the world and this year will mark their 20 year anniversary of providing professional jewellery sourcing platforms, which are an integral part of the jewellery and gem industry. UBM is now launching the first international sourcing fair in Europe, with the addition of the much anticipated Jewellery & Gem Fair Europe, held in Freiburg, Germany from 1-4 April 2014.

"Freiburg is conveniently located in the epicentre of major industry centres, with its German borders neighbouring France and Switzerland, also making the city easily accessible to Antwerp, Paris, Basel and Geneva, with each city being less than two hours away. It was also very important to us, to be close to major German jewellery cities, such as Pforzheim and Idar Oberstein. The jewellery and gem industry provides 11,000 jobs alone in Pforzheim and its surrounding areas."

Freiburg holds century old traditions in the industries of jewellery and precious metals. Freiburg's wealth and notoriety is based on, among many other things, silver ore from the nearby Black Forest. After the city purchased its independence in 1368, the area grew into the city of jewels it is today. This was led by the jewellery trade, with "borers" and "burnishers" (polishers) making rosary beads and later becoming precious stone cutters, turning out garnets, amethysts, carnelians and even corals into an abundance of jewellery and art. The City of Freiburg and Jewellery & Gem Fair Europe will be offering special tours to discover the city and learn more about its history, during the fair.

Apart from the city's great history and traditions, there are also many other qualities to this pearl of the Black Forest, and the site for Jewellery & Gem Fair Europe. Freiburg is one of the German cities with the highest quality of life. It is also the warmest city in the region, where residents hold a certain "savoir vivre". The initial launch attracted 12 group pavilions from Antwerp, Colombia, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Italy, Mauritius, Russia, Turkey, Thailand and United States. The importance of Jewellery & Gem Fair Europe is also supported by the city, with the Lord Mayor personally opening the fair.
