OAKLAND, Calif., Nov. 18, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Kaiser Permanente's Psychiatric Health Facility in Santa Clara, Calif. this week was named a "Top Performer on Key Quality Measures," an annual recognition given to hospitals for outstanding quality and safety.

The Northern California mental-health facility and 14 other Kaiser Permanente hospitals in California and Hawaii were honored by The Joint Commission – the leading accreditor of health care organizations in the United States. "Top Performer" status is awarded for exemplary performance in using evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to improve care in 10 conditions, including heart attack, surgical care and inpatient psychiatric services.

"Kaiser Permanente has had a sustained focus on delivering the highest quality mental health care to our members, and this recognition underscores our continuous efforts to provide the best care possible," said Don Mordecai, MD, director of Mental Health and Chemical Dependency Services, and chair, Chiefs of Psychiatry for Kaiser Permanente's Northern California Region. "Ensuring that care is easily available when it's needed is incredibly important, and at Kaiser Permanente, we have taken steps to ensure our members have access to the best mental health care professionals when they need them."

The recognition for the Kaiser Permanente psychiatric facility is the latest in a number of awards and honors highlighting Kaiser Permanente's mental health care services:

  • Kaiser Permanente Northern California was the only health plan in California to receive a 4-star rating for behavioral and mental health by California's Office of the Public Advocate.
  • Kaiser Permanente Southern California and Northern California commercial health plans were ranked among the nation's best and highest in the state in several measures of mental health care as reported in the National Committee for Quality Assurance's "Quality Compass®" dataset.

Along with Kaiser Permanente's psychiatric facility in Santa Clara, six other Kaiser Permanente hospitals in Northern California were named to The Joint Commission list of "Top Performers," including: Redwood City, Roseville, Sacramento, South Sacramento, Santa Clara and South San Francisco.

Seven Kaiser Permanente hospitals in Southern California also were honored: Orange County-Anaheim, Baldwin Park, Downey, Moreno Valley, San Diego, South Bay and West Los Angeles. In addition, Kaiser Permanente's Moanalua Medical Center in Honolulu was also recognized as a "Top Performer."

"Our integrated system, supported by technology, makes it easier for all of our health care providers and staff to deliver high-quality, coordinated care," said Patrick Courneya, MD, executive vice president and chief medical officer for Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Kaiser Foundation Hospitals. "We are proud that our physicians, nurses, clinicians and care teams are dedicated to helping each of our members live well and thrive."
