ALEXANDRIA, Va., April 29, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Diabetes Association will present the Roger Pecoraro Award to Karel Bakker, MD, PhD. This award recognizes a researcher who has made scientific contributions and demonstrates an untiring commitment to improving the understanding of the detection, treatment and prevention of diabetic foot complications. Dr. Bakker will be recognized with this honor at the Association's 75th Scientific Sessions® taking place June 5-9, 2015, at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in Boston.
Immediate Past-Chair of the International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Consultative Section on the Diabetic Foot, Dr. Bakker served as a specialist in internal medicine, diabetology and endocrinology at the Spaarne Hospital, Heemstede, The Netherlands until his retirement in 2002. Dr. Bakker founded the first specialized Diabetic Foot Clinic in the Netherlands in 1987 and has made significant contributions to shape guidelines on the management and prevention of diabetic foot complications since 1996. In addition, he initiated multiple implementation programs throughout the world and led the year long awareness campaign of IDF's World Diabetes Day program in 2005.
Dr. Bakker will deliver the Roger Pecoraro Award Lecture "Thirty Years of Diabetic Foot Care: From the Wilderness to the Promised Land" on Saturday, June 6, at 4 p.m. EST.
