BATTLE CREEK, Mich., July 25, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- This summer, in conjunction with select Walmart store blood drives, Keebler and the American Red Cross are recognizing one local Arkansas advocate with the Ernie Keebler Goodness Award for taking the life-saving act of giving blood to a new level.

Bill Mendenhall of Fayetteville, Ark. will receive the Ernie Keebler Goodness Award from the Greater Ozarks Arkansas region of the Red Cross. He has been a chapter board member since 1982 and is still a frequent blood donor – having donated 110 units of blood to date. Bill first began working with the American Red Cross and giving blood when he was serving in the Army.
Keebler established this new award to recognize "good cookies" and encourage additional acts of goodness. Keebler worked with the Red Cross to select the award recipients based on those who donate blood frequently, inspire others to donate and volunteer at local blood drives.
"Ernie Keebler Goodness Award recipients are chosen because they are leaders in their communities and emulate the selfless qualities of a good cookie," said Melissa Pawlowicz, senior director of integrated promotions for Kellogg's. "These local advocates give their time, energy and even their blood to help others in need."
As a recipient of the Ernie Keebler Goodness Award, Bill Mendenhall will receive a crystal trophy of Ernie Keebler, a one-year supply of Keebler cookies and two $500 Walmart gift cards—one for personal use and one for a charity of his choice to encourage more acts of goodness.
Keebler supports the Red Cross blood drives at Walmart stores and other locations throughout the country by providing Keebler cookies in exchange for giving blood. Keebler provides more than 6 million cookies annually, rewarding those "good cookies" who donate. After all, one good cookie deserves another.
Blood donors can share their passion for blood donation and learn more about making a difference in their local communities on the Keebler Facebook page at Facebook.com/KeeblerCookies. Appointments to give blood can be made by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or online at www.RedCrossBlood.org.
