Law Firm Offers Scholarship for Students Who Admit to Texting While Driving
The first step to solving a problem is admitting there is one.
GLENDALE, Calif., Nov. 28, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Distracted driving is a national epidemic responsible for injuring thousands of Americans each year. Distracted driving accounts for 25% of all motor vehicle crash fatalities and 58% of all teen crashes. The steady rise in accidents related to driver distraction has led many to coin distracted driving the "new drunk driving."
Megeredchian Law recognizes that driver habits need to change and they need to change fast. The first step to solving a problem is always admitting that there is one. That is precisely the reason why the first annual Break The Habit Distracted Driving Scholarship was founded this year. Afterall, self-admission and self-education are very powerful tools.
The $1,000 scholarship is offered to students attending universities across the country who are willing to admit to distracted driving and take corrective action to ditch the habit. Students are asked to submit an essay detailing an account of a distracted driving incident along with an outline of concrete steps they will use to make sure they never drive distracted again. Alex Megeredchian, founding attorney at Megeredchian Law, hopes that the scholarship will inspire students to think critically about their behavior while behind the wheel. In this interconnected digital age, it is far too easy to fall victim to distraction. Everyone thinks they've mastered double tasking until an attempt at double tasking causes an accident. The worst part about distracted driving accidents is that they are completely preventable.
While the scholarship is only available to college students, Megeredchian Law urges everyone to take a hard look in the mirror and examine their road habits. If all of us put down our phones while driving, 25% of all fatal motor vehicle crashes could be prevented. Megeredchian Law intends to continue offering the Break The Habit Distracted Driving Scholarship as a way to spread awareness and promote discussion around the dangers of phone use while driving.
