How Much Do You Really Save With the Ecotank

LONG BEACH, Calif., March 15, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Inspired by consumers' increasing frustration with the high price of ink, Epson recently released their continuous ink tank printer series amid much fanfare. Marketed as a revolutionary new ink technology, the EcoTank series outwardly promises both value and convenience to their customers. The new series features four refillable ink tanks instead of the usual four cartridge setup, and the refill process is relatively painless. However, the convenience of the ink tank system is negligible when the total cost of ink and machine is taken into consideration. LD Products, the leading aftermarket cartridge supplier in the United States, crunched the numbers and found the total cost of operation of an EcoTank printer to be considerably more expensive than operating a comparable, lower priced Epson inkjet using compatible ink cartridges.

Epson sells the EcoTank WF-R4640 for $1,199.99 which includes enough ink to print up to 20,000 pages of black and color documents. Remove the continuous ink tank system from the equation and the far cheaper Epson WF-4640 inkjet offers similar features for just $249.99. Include enough compatible ink to match the same 20,000 page yield offered by the EcoTank, and you come out ahead $610.70 sticking with an Epson WF-4640 using generic ink. With the average consumer printing around 40 pages a month and most replacing their machines every couple of years, making an investment in a high priced EcoTank printer is impractical.
