NASHVILLE, Tenn., Oct. 8, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Boston Celtics appointed Brad Stevens as the head coach of their famed NBA franchise and have traded away all of their veteran players. With the team starting over, there's bound to be growing pains and they're going to have some difficult times and games ahead of them. For a young coach to lead one of the top five most historic franchises in all of sports history through this anticipated tumultuous season, in the tough town of Boston, it's going to take amazing leadership.
Fortunately for Celtics fans Stevens is prepared to deliver the leadership needed for success.
"Brad Stevens has historically coached according to a set of six values-based principles broadly known as The Butler Way which incorporates the concepts of Humility, Passion, Unity / Teamwork, Service, Thankfulness, and Accountability," notes Kent Millard, Steven's longtime pastor and the co-author of Lead Like Butler (Abingdon Press). "And he'll no doubt bring this proven coaching style with him to helm the Celtics team."
In 2011, with Stevens leading the coaching staff, Butler University made history as the first team to make it to two consecutive finals of the NCAA basketball tournament without being seeded #1 or #2. As the smallest school to play in the championship game in the 40-year history of the tournament, Butler became the quintessential "Cinderella" team.
In writing the book Lead Like Butler: Six Principles for Value-Based Leaders, Kent Millard and Judith Cebula spent extensive time with head coach Brad Stevens and his then Butler University coaching team and players.
"I feel indebted to those head coaches [at Butler] who came before me because those values and thoughts have helped me grow as a person, a husband, a father, and a coach," said Stevens in the book's foreword.
"I believe that people just getting to know Stevens will find that he encourages unity of the team, embraces the process of growth, executes well thought-out plays, and demonstrates toughness in every circumstance. These are values that form a solid foundation for anyone striving for success in life's journey whether it be on or off the court," adds Millard. "Our nation needs more leaders like Brad Stevens and Boston is lucky to have him."
