Leading Emerging Companies Lawyer Joe Daniels Joins McCarter & English to Co-Head Start-Up Practice
Brings Strong Company- and VC-Counseling Experience to New York Office
NEW YORK, Jan. 4, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Joe Daniels, a pre-eminent New York lawyer representing emerging companies, has joined the New York office of McCarter & English as co-chair of the firm's burgeoning start-up practice.
Daniels is best known for his work with early-stage technology, life sciences and consumer companies, as well as the investors and investment banks who support them. For more than 20 years, he has advised investors and companies around the world on venture capital and private equity financings, mergers and acquisitions, initial public offerings and general corporate matters, from day-to-day business transactions to technology and distribution partnerships and joint ventures.
Daniels further strengthens the firm's Venture Capital and Emerging Companies practice, which is prominent in the start-up centers on the East Coast and nationwide, including New York, New Jersey, New England, the Mid-Atlantic and California. He spent the first third of his career practicing in Silicon Valley and San Diego, and is now one of relatively few lawyers in New York City who focuses exclusively on emerging companies. He maintains deep ties to the start-up and investor communities on the East Coast and in California by helping to form – or serving as a mentor or speaker at – various accelerators, incubators, investor events and universities nationwide.
"From start-up to exit, and everything in between, Joe is widely regarded as a top emerging company lawyer, and he makes a great addition to the firm, our New York office and our emerging growth practice," said Michael P. Kelly, chairman of McCarter & English. "Joe has a large and growing practice representing hundreds of start-ups.
"Our attorneys and existing clients are looking forward to collaborating not only on financings and exits, but also technology commercialization transactions, intellectual property prosecution, employment and tax matters," Kelly said. "He's a creative dealmaker on behalf of his clients, and a brilliant lawyer who strengthens our already robust VC and start-up practice and our support of the tech, tech-enabled and life sciences eco-systems."
Howard Kailes, chair of the firm's Corporate, Securities and Business Transactions practice group, of which the venture capital practice is a part, said Daniels' arrival comes at an opportune time for the firm and its clients. Kailes noted that in the last few years, the local start-up market was the second largest nationally by dollars invested and number of deals.
"Joe has built a great practice serving this market, and as he joins David Sorin and our other venture capital and startup lawyers, he substantially bolsters our capabilities in the space," Kailes said, referring to the other co-leader of the practice.
Sorin said Daniels will help McCarter solidify its grip on the East Coast startup and investor market, and expand more aggressively into California's.
Daniels joins as a partner from SheppardMullin, where he was also a partner in its New York office. He was previously a partner at Loeb & Loeb. Daniels received his law degree from the University of Southern California, Gould School of Law in 1996 and his bachelor's degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1992.
