LEDA hosts 2018 Career Institute at Princeton University, thanks to a transformative investment from the Gerstner Family Foundation
NEW YORK, Aug. 9, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America (LEDA) is thrilled to report that the Gerstner Family Foundation has underwritten the 2018 LEDA Career Institute, building on its flagship grant for the first annual Career Institute in 2017 and continuing its support for LEDA. "This transformative investment is one-of-a-kind," said LEDA Executive Director Beth Breger. "We are tremendously grateful for the Gerstner Family Foundation's leadership and commitment to LEDA as we seek to advance career opportunities for our nation's future leaders."
Gerstner Family Foundation Chairman Louis V. Gerstner, Jr., shared how his undergraduate experience shaped his interest in helping students explore professional pathways and prepare for the professional world: "I learned that there was a whole other set of skills I needed to have a successful career after college…My education was invaluable, but what I learned outside of the classroom was just as important for my success."
The five-day LEDA Career Institute will be held on August 11th-15th at Princeton University, with a cohort of 152 LEDA Career Fellows, rising sophomores attending top colleges. The Career Institute is the signature component of the LEDA Career Network, which provides high-achieving, low-income students with career exploration, professional development, and career advising throughout the year.
During the 2018 Career Institute, Career Fellows will explore career paths in a variety of industries and cultivate the skills needed to successfully enter and thrive as leaders in a broad range of careers. Workshops and convenings will be led by representatives from top companies; lead partners include Bank of America, Bloomberg LP, CoStar, EY, Goldman Sachs, Insight Venture Partners, JPMorgan Chase & Co, Morgan Stanley and PIMCO, as well as LEDA staff.
The 2017 Career Institute was a strong success, with many students getting jobs and internships as a result, and 58% of LEDA Career Fellows citing a change in their career interests, illustrating the impact of the knowledge they gained from the exposure at the Career Institute. As 2017 LEDA Career Fellow Yesenia from Yale University shared, "I wasn't expecting to really have a personal preference change in my career interests, but talking to my counselors helped me to really think about my future."
