ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Sept. 9, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- This summer's heatwaves have already had a major impact on travel, causing disruptions, heat-related illnesses, and travelers to rethink their trips entirely. Now, heat-caused disruptions are affecting river cruises, as low water levels in some of Europe's most traveled rivers are forcing cruise lines to alter or cancel itineraries.
Squaremouth, the nation's largest travel insurance marketplace, is helping river cruise travelers understand how to protect their trips before they book, since most travel insurance plans don't cover cancellations caused by reduced water levels.
Most Policies Don't Cover Low Water Levels
Even travel insurance plans built specifically for cruises generally don't cover low or high water levels. Squaremouth offers 6 cruise-specific plans on its platform, more than any travel insurance marketplace. Of those, however, only 2 include coverage for trip disruptions caused by water levels: IMG Choice Cruise and Tin Leg Cruise.
"A lot of travelers assume a plan built for cruises would cover a water-related disruption, but that's usually not the case," says Chrissy Valdez, Senior Director of Operations at Squaremouth. "Only a select few plans do, so with insufficient water levels becoming a more frequent issue, it's important to check the fine print of a policy before you buy it."
The Two Cruise Plans That Do Cover Water Levels
IMG's Choice Cruise plan offers three benefits for water level disruptions:
- Trip Cancellation: Reimburses 100% of prepaid, non-refundable trip expenses if the cruise is cancelled before departure because water levels are either too low or too high to set sail.
- Trip Interruption: Covers all unused trip expenses, plus return transportation home, if the cruise is cut short for the same reason.
- Travel Inconvenience: Pays $100 if the cruise is diverted because of water levels and causes you to miss a port of call.
Tin Leg Cruise also covers water level disruptions, but only through the Trip Cancellation benefit. Like IMG, this plan also reimburses 100% of prepaid trip costs under Trip Cancellation, making it a strong option for travelers who are mainly concerned about a cruise being called off before it starts.
Is Buying Cancel For Any Reason a Better Option?
In many cases, adding Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) to a plan is worth it for cruisers, since it provides maximum cancellation flexibility and doesn't require a policy built specifically for cruises. But for those worried specifically about water levels, while CFAR can cover you if you need to cancel your trip, it's more expensive than opting for a specialized plan that already covers this concern.
CFAR must be purchased within a narrow window after the initial trip deposit, costs 40%+ more, and reimburses either 50% or 75% of the trip cost. By comparison, IMG Choice Cruise and Tin Leg Cruise each reimburse 100% of the trip cost for water level-caused cancellations.
