LowestMed Releases its Annual Lists of the Top 100 drugs filled by consumers in 2016
SALT LAKE CITY, May 23, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, LowestMed released its annual lists of the top 100 prescription drugs filled, in the U.S., by consumers using and not using health insurance. Topping the list of drugs filled using insurance is Atorvastatin Calcium (generic Lipitor), a medication used to treat high cholesterol. The top drug filled not using insurance is Phentermine (generic Apidex-p), a weight loss medication.
Some drugs appear in the top ten of both lists, suggesting an interesting pattern in consumer prescription drug purchasing habits. As healthcare costs rise and more medications are being excluded from drug formularies, consumers are looking for ways, outside of health insurance, to save money on their medications.

"These lists are proof that consumers shouldn't assume their insurance's negotiated price for medications is always the lowest," said Brad Bangerter, LowestMed CEO. "Consumers that shop around, using tools like LowestMed, often find their medications at a lower price."
With the status of healthcare reform becoming increasingly unclear and the growing public frustration with surging drug prices, these lists offer insight into consumer behaviors and how they are coping with the possible changes to out-of-pocket costs.
