EVANSTON, Ill., Oct. 27, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- As interest in lymphatic massage continues to grow, more consumers are seeking reliable information about what this specialized technique can do and whether the benefits are supported by research. During National Massage Therapy Awareness Week®, the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) is helping answer those questions by highlighting the latest research on manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) and the role it may play in supporting health and recovery.
MLD is a gentle, specialized massage technique designed to encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid throughout the body. It has long been used as part of comprehensive lymphedema care, and a growing body of research suggests it may also help reduce swelling, relieve discomfort, improve recovery, and enhance quality of life for people living with certain health conditions.

New Research Highlights Promising Benefits of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
Recent studies have strengthened the evidence supporting MLD across a variety of health conditions.
2026 Study Highlights Benefits of MLD After Breast Cancer Surgery
A 2026 meta-analysis of nine studies involving 1,183 breast cancer surgery patients found that MLD reduced the risk of developing lymphedema by 38% compared with usual care. The benefits were even greater when MLD was combined with compression therapy, reducing lymphedema risk by 44% while also improving quality of life. The findings suggest that MLD can be an important component of lymphedema care, particularly when used early and alongside compression garments as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.1
Recent Meta-Analysis Highlights MLD's Potential for Carpal Tunnel Relief
In 2025, a meta-analysis of 12 studies involving 479 people with carpal tunnel syndrome found that MLD and other lymphatic drainage techniques helped reduce pain, decrease swelling around the median nerve, and improve nerve function. Participants experienced meaningful improvements in symptom severity and hand function, with benefits that appeared to be maintained over time. Researchers concluded that MLD may offer a promising, non-invasive option for managing carpal tunnel symptoms and supporting long-term nerve health.2
Fibromyalgia Patients Report MLD Improves Pain and Quality of Life
Emerging research suggests that MLD may also help address symptoms associated with chronic pain conditions. In a 2025 trial involving women with fibromyalgia, participants who received MLD in addition to standard medical care reported significant improvements in pain, overall symptom burden, and health-related quality of life. Importantly, those improvements were observed not only immediately after treatment but were maintained for up to 24 weeks, suggesting that MLD may provide lasting benefits for some individuals when incorporated into a broader treatment approach.3
What Consumers Should Know
While research continues to identify important therapeutic uses for lymphatic massage, experts emphasize that its benefits are most clearly supported for specific health concerns rather than general wellness claims.
"Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) can be a valuable therapeutic tool when used appropriately, particularly in managing lymphedema," said Kelly. "Research also suggests it may help relieve swelling, discomfort and feelings of heaviness associated with conditions such as lipedema, venous disorders, postsurgical recovery and certain acute injuries. However, consumers should understand that MLD is not a cure-all. There is currently limited scientific evidence that it detoxifies the body, produces lasting weight loss or significantly boosts immunity in otherwise healthy individuals, despite claims circulating online."
Researchers also note that more studies are needed to better understand who benefits most from MLD, how it works alongside other therapies, and which treatment protocols provide the greatest benefit for different conditions.
Finding a Qualified Massage Therapist
Consumers interested in MLD should seek a massage therapist who has completed specialized training and has experience performing the technique. A qualified therapist should review the client's health history, discuss treatment goals, and determine whether MLD is appropriate for their individual circumstances.
