Mayerson Academy to Help Schools Build Thriving Learning Communities
Nine Grantees Selected for Positive Character Strengths Education Program
CINCINNATI, Ohio, May 12, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Mayerson Academy announced today that nine grantees were selected to receive $10,000 of professional learning services, tools and products to create a Thriving Learning Community within their schools focusing on individual character strengths to develop social emotional competencies. The competitive grant process began on March 28th and attracted interest from more than 1500 schools.
"We have selected an amazing group of schools from Chicago; Columbus; Cincinnati; Ravenna, Ohio; St. Louis; Dallas; and Pueblo, Colorado," said Jillian Darwish, Ed. D., President of Mayerson Academy. "Without exception, these nine applications stood out from the rest in their deep understanding, capacity, and desire to bring the science of character strengths and social and emotional learning competencies to their communities. We are excited to welcome them to the Academy this summer and to work with them throughout the year."
Grant recipients will participate in the Champions Institute, a three-day immersive learning experience June 27 - 29th at the renowned Mayerson Academy in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Champions Institute will prepare each team to return to their schools and implement a comprehensive blended learning curriculum with tools, resources and ongoing support.

Brown Middle School in Ravenna, OH
Crown Community Academy, Chicago, IL
Graham Expeditionary Middle School, Columbus, OH
Heroes K-8 Academy, Pueblo, CO
Immaculate Heart of Mary, Cincinnati, OH
Mt. Auburn International Academy, Cincinnati, OH
Whitfield School, St. Louis, MO
Winton Woods Middle School, Cincinnati, OH
Each participating school will receive personalized VIA Character Strengths Surveys and Reports, Quarterly Webinars, Online Coaching and Support, Thriving Learning Communities Classroom kits, evaluation services and a one-year subscription to Happify, an online gaming platform that supports social and emotional learning concepts.
The competition was open to U.S. public, private, or parochial middle or PK-8 schools committed to accelerating motivation, collaboration, learning and performance in grades 5-8 and was made possible, in part, through the generous support from The Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile, Jr./U.S. Bank Foundation and an anonymous donor of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation.
