McGraw-Hill Launches Math Intervention Training Series for Number Worlds Program

NEW YORK, April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- McGraw-Hill Education's Intervention & Special Needs Center, which addresses drop-out prevention and ensures struggling students get the instruction they need, is inviting educators in South Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Texas to discuss top issues in math education and learn about McGraw-Hill's standards-based edition of Number Worlds.  A comprehensive math intervention program for Grades K-8, Number Worlds is aligned with each state's math standards.  The multi-state Number Worlds training series is free of charge, and includes one-day events throughout April and May.

Each event will feature two sessions:

The "Mathematics Training for School Administrators" session, which will explore a range of topics, including:

• The latest research in mathematics education
• The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Focal Points and how they impact math instruction
• Policies and issues in mathematics education
• Planning for meaningful mathematics professional development activities

The "Train the Trainer" session, which will focus on:

• The correlation between Number Worlds and each state's standards
• Differentiated Instruction in math
• General components of the Number Worlds program and their impact on students with special learning needs

Several presentations will be led by nationally recognized mathematics expert, Douglas H.

Clements, the SUNY Distinguished Professor in the University at Buffalo's Graduate School of Education and an active member of the Mathematics Work Team focusing on the K-12 Common Core State Standards Initiative.

"Continuing education for math teachers and school administrators is imperative to the enhancement of math instruction of special needs students," said Dr. Clements.  "The specialized Number Worlds training series – combined with an effective math intervention program and discourse of current policies, issues and research in mathematics – will provide educators with practical knowledge to implement in their classrooms and schools."

Dr. Clements is co-author of the Building Blocks curriculum, contributor to the National Math Panel Report and co-author of NCTM's Curriculum Focal Points, and has published more than 100 refereed research studies, eight books, 50 chapters, and 200 additional publications in the areas of mathematics education, educational technology and early childhood education.

Those who attend the Number Worlds training series and participate in McGraw-Hill's post-event survey will have an opportunity to win a Flip camera if they submit their survey online.  A random drawing of all registered survey respondents will be conducted after each event, and one winner will be selected from each state.
