HOLLYWOOD, Fla., Sept. 8, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Memorial Healthcare System reported record financial results for fiscal year 2026, reflecting continued operational strength and a steadfast commitment to reinvesting in patient care, expanding access to healthcare and serving South Florida residents regardless of their ability to pay.
The public healthcare system reported $3.8 billion in operating revenue, a 7.7% increase over the previous fiscal year, while operating income increased more than 60% to $220.7 million. Excess of revenues over expenses reached a record $487.6 million, an increase of 20.3% over the prior year. Memorial's net position also grew by more than $503 million, ending the fiscal year at a record $4.1 billion, further strengthening the organization's long-term financial stability.
"These record results are not about profits. They are about purpose," said Shane Strum, president and CEO of Memorial Healthcare System. "Our financial strength allows us to continue investing in the people, programs and facilities our community depends on while remaining true to our mission of providing exceptional care for every patient, regardless of their ability to pay."
Throughout the fiscal year, Memorial continued to care for patients with increasingly complex medical needs while expanding access to outpatient services. Hospital outpatient visits increased 5.7% and patient acuity continued to increase as more patients sought advanced specialty care across Memorial's nationally recognized cancer, cardiac, neuroscience and pediatric programs.
As one of the nation's largest public healthcare systems, Memorial continues to reinvest its financial strength into projects and programs that directly benefit the communities it serves. Current investments include the $670 million surgical tower at Memorial Regional Hospital, two new freestanding emergency rooms, the new Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute building at Memorial Hospital West and continued investment in advanced technology and specialized clinical programs.
"Our financial performance gives us the ability to continue investing where it matters most," said Irfan Mirza, chief financial officer of Memorial Healthcare System. "Every dollar we earn is reinvested into patient care, our workforce, innovative technology and facilities that improve access and outcomes for our community. Our financial strength also allows us to continue providing essential services that many healthcare systems across the country have reduced or eliminated."
Memorial's financial stability also enables the organization to continue fulfilling its mission as a public healthcare system, providing hundreds of millions of dollars in charitable and uncompensated care while ensuring patients receive the care they need, regardless of their ability to pay.
The healthcare system maintains approximately $3.5 billion in cash and investments, providing the flexibility to invest in future growth while remaining financially resilient in a rapidly changing healthcare environment. Each day, Memorial invests over $9 million in salaries, supplies and services that support more than 17,500 team members and contribute to the South Florida economy.
Memorial also continues to use minimal tax revenues solely to satisfy its governmental obligations, including Broward County's Medicaid match and other statutory requirements. No tax dollars are used to support the day-to-day operations of Memorial's hospitals and healthcare facilities. During fiscal year 2026, the organization's financial strength also supported the South Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners' decision to reduce the millage rate for the 15th consecutive year. That reduction was approved in September 2025 as part of the fiscal year 2026 budget.
Memorial continues to maintain strong investment-grade credit ratings of Aa3 from Moody's and AA from S&P, reflecting the organization's sound financial management and long-term stability. Those ratings help lower borrowing costs and allow Memorial to continue investing in facilities, technology and innovative healthcare programs that benefit the community.
"Everything we do comes back to our mission," Strum said. "These financial results position Memorial to continue expanding access to care, investing in our workforce, advancing medical innovation and ensuring our community has access to world-class healthcare for generations to come."
