Milwaukee Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative Named a Mutual of America 2011 Community Partnership Award Winner
Partnership Created to Help Address the Growing Problem of Teen Pregnancy in Milwaukee
NEW YORK, Nov. 17, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Mutual of America announced today that the Milwaukee Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative was named a Merit Finalist of the 2011 Community Partnership Award competition.
When United Way of Greater Milwaukee convened community partners in 2008 to discuss the growing problem of teen pregnancy in their city, Milwaukee had the dubious distinction of ranking second in the nation in teen births.
Through a partnership between the United Way of Greater Milwaukee, the City of Milwaukee Health Department, Milwaukee Public Schools, Aurora Health Care and organizations from public, private and social sectors, the Initiative has helped ease this vexing problem through a series of programs and awareness campaigns designed to educate teens and adults.
"We're seeing measurable results in the right direction," says Nicole Angresano, vice president of community impact for United Way. Indeed, the local teen birth rate has dropped for teens, ages 15 to 17, from 52 births per 1,000 in 2006 to 44 births today, the lowest rate in more than three decades.
