MAC's Board of Directors elect Robert Steane of Cameco Corporation as Chair
OTTAWA, June 17, 2015 /CNW/ - The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) is pleased to announce that Robert (Bob) Steane, Senior Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer of global uranium company, Cameco Corporation, has been elected as Chair of MAC for a two-year term.
Effective today, Mr. Steane replaces Zoë Yujnovich, Vice President of Oil Sands Operations for Shell Canada, who served as Chair from June 2013 to June 2015.

Mr. Steane has been an active member of MAC for many years, holding several leadership positions. He has served on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee since 2012, most recently in the position as First Vice-Chair. From 2013 to 2015, he also served as Chair of MAC's newest committee, the Aboriginal Affairs Committee, which is focused on improving engagement with Aboriginal communities and growing the participation of Aboriginal people in mining. As the largest industrial employer of Aboriginal people in Canada, Cameco is widely recognized as a leader in Aboriginal engagement and partnership. As such, Mr. Steane's contributions as Chair of the Aboriginal Affairs Committee were invaluable.

Mr. Steane's career with Cameco began at the Key Lake Mining Corporation in 1983, one of Cameco's longest running northern Saskatchewan uranium operations. He has held numerous positions within the company, assuming increasing responsibility with each appointment. These roles included: mill operations; General Manager; Vice President of Mining (Saskatchewan); Vice President, Fuel Services Division (Port Hope, Ontario); and Vice President, Major Projects Division (Saskatchewan) before assuming his current role.
Prior to joining Cameco, Mr. Steane developed extensive engineering, operations and project experience from past roles with Bougainville Copper Ltd. in Papua New Guinea, the Rossing Uranium mine in Namibia, and the Ranger Uranium mine in Australia.
He holds a BSc in metallurgical engineering from the Colorado School of Mines and a Diploma of Technology in chemical and metallurgical technology from the British Columbia Institute of Technology. In addition to his role with MAC, Mr. Steane also sits on the Board of Directors for The Royal University Hospital Foundation.
