MARYSVILLE, Ohio, Sept. 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Miracle-Gro, the most trusted name in gardening, and Rachael Ray, Emmy Award winning daytime television host, well-loved cook and author, installed the Camden Children's Garden in South Philadelphia, introducing the neighborhood to fresh produce from the garden to the dinner table.
"Rachael Ray relates to her followers, making tips, recipes and suggestions easy to understand and replicate. People just naturally appreciate her savvy, and want to follow her advice," says Carlos Hernandez of Miracle-Gro, "We are so excited to partner on this South Philadelphia garden and help educate this neighborhood on the fun and ease of gardening."
In just five days, 16 raised beds, a vertical flowerbed, 2,869-gallon rainwater cisterns, and an iron fence were built from the Miracle-Gro donation of gardening soils and construction supplies. The garden's afterlife will be managed by the Camden City Garden Club, which operates the Camden Children's Garden and many urban gardens on vacant lots in Camden. Residents in the South Philadelphia neighborhood can volunteer to maintain the garden, and grow produce in the raised beds.
"It's one thing to build a community garden, it's something completely different for a community garden to sustain itself," said Dean Hill, a landscape architect based in Orlando, Florida, hired by the show to design the garden. "We want to make sure this thing is successful today, tomorrow, next year, the following year."
The Camden Children's Garden can be seen on the "Rachael Ray" show Monday September 26. For local showtimes, please visit www.rachaelrayshow.com.
