Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense Asks: Why Do We Ban A Chocolate Easter Egg To Protect American Children, But Not Assault Weapons?

INDIANAPOLIS, March 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- On Good Friday, a holiday celebrated by many Americans, Moms Demand Action is hand-delivering Kinder Surprise Eggs to newsrooms in major cities to relay an alarming truth: In America, it's easier to access an assault weapon than a chocolate Easter egg.

Kinder Surprise Eggs have been banned in America since 1938 due to a law prohibiting inedible objects inside food, which could pose a hazard to young children.

"During Easter weekend, Moms Demand Action is asking all Americans to use 'gun sense' when answering one simple question: 'Why is it easier for an American to buy an assault weapon than it is to buy a chocolate Easter egg?,'" said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.  

A note delivered with each of the Kinder Surprise Eggs includes a call to action to share the message and contact Congress and ask for a vote on proposed gun legislation. Congress is preparing to return to Washington after recess on April 8 and is expected to vote soon after on stronger gun laws that would make American children and families safer.

"It doesn't make sense that a chocolate Easter egg is regarded as more hazardous to our children's safety than an assault weapon. The majority of Americans support common sense gun laws. And as Congress prepares to return to Washington, we need to put this reality into a context that people can understand," said Watts.
