Sloan's experiences watching her grandfather tend to his garden in the backwoods of Alabama inspired her to pursue a career in Natural Resources and Sustainable Development. She is currently working towards a master's degree in that field at American University in Washington, D.C. With the knowledge gained from her education, she hopes to bring together local farmers, businesses, and government entities to create the best possible sustainability practices.
This marks the first year of many to come for the m.s.Woods spring scholarship essay competition. "We started this program to encourage students to consider how the home or community they grew up in got them to where they are today," CEO Mike Woods said. "Education is important not only for the individual, but also for everyone around them. We decided to do our part by providing college financial assistance for one hardworking, well-spoken student, and will continue to do so each year."
"Hayden's essay was beautifully written, but it also highlighted her compassion and her commitment to home, community, and the environment," Woods added.
The m.s.Woods spring scholarship is available to any current or prospective college student who is or will be attending an accredited U.S. institution.
