ORLANDO, Fla., Jan. 13, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- In a recent survey of Orlando residents, 47.6 percent of respondents indicated they or their family, friends or neighbors have been burglarized within the city.
The survey, released by local residential and commercial security company, Crime Prevention Security Systems, collected data from 216 participants regarding residents' experiences with and perceptions of crime in the Orlando area.
23.4 percent of survey respondents said they feel the crime rate has increased in their neighborhoods over the past year while less than 4 percent believe crime has diminished.
The survey findings reflect the disturbing frequency of crimes throughout Orlando. According to city data website, NeighborhoodScout.com, Orlando's crime rate is among the highest in the country, placing in the top 2 percent of most dangerous cities in the United States.
There is some slightly good news in the report, in that less than 4 percent of residents said violent crimes such as assault, armed robbery or murder are more frequent threats in their neighborhoods than property crimes. Statistics bear that out.
In 2012, the city averaged 53 crimes per day of which nearly 87 percent were property crimes such as vandalism, theft and burglary.
Jorgia McAfee, Crime Prevention Security Systems vice president of development, said the results point to the need for increased vigilance when it comes to home security.
"If there's one place you should feel safe, it's in your own home," McAfee said. "No matter where you live, you want the peace of mind of knowing your property and family are protected."
To guard against burglary, security experts recommend keeping doors and windows locked at all times, adding motion-activated lighting to a home's exterior and installing a monitored home alarm system. Video surveillance is another increasingly popular and affordable crime prevention option for homeowners.
