SAN DIEGO, April 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Online video conferencing innovator Nefsis® announced today the addition of more familiar choices for IT staff considering secure video conference options. The Nefsis global cloud secures all web, voice over IP (VoIP), and video data over secure socket/transport layer security (SSL/TLS) encrypted connections. While prevalent in web conferencing and online services, the use of SSL/TLS connections with public key infrastructure is not as customary in the video conferencing industry.
The worldwide growth of online services, including e-commerce and online banking, has long since established SSL/TLS as the prevailing industry standard in providing secure web services. Today, most IT staff expect their online service providers to use SSL/TLS encrypted connections with full public key infrastructure (PKI) implementation using a third-party signed certificate, certificate authority, and key exchange.
However, most traditional room-based video conferencing systems do not use PKI since direct room-to-room connections were historically prevalent, and the overhead and latency it would have required. As such, telepresence and room-based installations use a variety of mechanisms, including AES symmetric-key encryption with manual key management, with some using different methodologies for voice, video, and data.
"The architecture and manual key pair management of most room-based video conferencing systems pre-dates the recent growth of the Internet. We're pleased to offer SSL/TLS security with full PKI implementation – an industry standard approach that's more familiar to IT staff today," said Allen Drennan, Nefsis Chief Technology Officer. "We look forward to announcing additional security options for increasing levels of security requirements."
