SALT LAKE CITY, May 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Net Nanny^® announced today the selection of Net Nanny for Android^® by the Brooklyn Public Library in New York, to protect 1,000 Android tablets used by library patrons. Net Nanny for Android is a PCMag.com Editors' Choice* winner and combines Internet filtering with app management for Android devices.

The Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is the fifth largest library system in the U.S. serving 2.5 million people with thousands of public programs, millions of books, and over 1,100 computers for patrons to use.

After Hurricane Sandy caused severe water damage to the library's books, magazines, and DVDs, BPL received 1,000 Google Nexus 7 Android tablets through a generous donation. The devices were intended for patrons in hurricane-impacted neighborhoods to use at home and then return. This was the first time tablets were available to be checked out.

To protect the tablets, BPL needed a scalable, robust solution that could be quickly installed and centrally managed. BPL also wanted to ensure all devices be compliant with the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA).

Gerald Horton, network technician for BPL, considered two Internet filter vendors for the Android solution. With the library's commitment to provide children with free access to information, it was imperative to screen out pornography and other harmful content on the tablets.

"The thing we liked about Net Nanny was that we had more control in how to manage what's being done on the device," said Horton. "We can create the users and within each user profile, we can set policies to apply filtering or have other allowances depending on the user settings we choose."

Horton continued, "One added benefit of Net Nanny for Android was that it has an Application Manager, which was easy to use; and its filtering of unwanted Internet sites was more reliable."

Like most libraries, there was little funding or budget for software acquisitions; however, at the end, Net Nanny for Android was chosen over another free product.

"Even though the competitor's product was free, there were limitations as far as how we could manage it," said Horton. "Net Nanny's management capability was the big selling point. We had an option to get a free solution and we went with Net Nanny."
