New All-In-One Energy Toolkit for Supermarkets Attacks Energy 'Shrink' at the Store Level
$30 - $50 in Revenue Needed To Recover Every $1 of Energy Waste
LEXINGTON, Mass., Feb. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- With profit margins hovering around 1% and energy waste or "shrink" stealing up to 10% of a store's energy budget, supermarkets need new tools to control energy expenses. And now store managers have that new tool: the See The Light Supermarket Manager's Energy Toolkit. Created exclusively for the food retail industry by Kilojolts Consulting Group, this "energy manager in a box" comes bundled with everything operators need to implement, promote, and measure the results of an energy waste reduction program. Kilojolts' President Gary Markowitz has worked with such leading food marketers as Safeway, Star Markets, and C&S Wholesale Grocers.
Each Supermarket Manager's Energy Toolkit includes employee education tools, customized promotional materials, and a license for See The Light Energy Benchmarking Software. The Toolkits walk managers step-by-step through a proven process for modifying employee behaviors, integrating energy efficient practices into daily operations, and verifying reductions in energy usage. "Supermarkets need to earn an additional $30–$50 in sales to make up for every dollar stores waste needlessly on energy," noted Markowitz. "So every dollar we help companies avoid spending drops to the bottom-line profit of their operation."
Refrigeration, heating, and lighting comprise more than 50% of a typical supermarket's energy consumption. So See The Light tackles the waste found in these areas through education, re-training where necessary, and positive reinforcement. See The Light addresses waste in every department, from the cases to the kitchen, bakery, offices, and back of store. "Employees aren't deliberately wasting energy by leaving lights and ovens on, cooler doors open, or letting water leaks languish," said Markowitz. "This program gives managers the tools to transform inefficient practices into energy-smart habits."
Operators measure the success of their energy waste reduction program with See The Light software, the Toolkit's proprietary energy benchmarking tool. Unlike other energy benchmarking software, which only measure the generic MBTU's per square foot, See The Light software allows supermarket managers to establish a baseline metric most valuable to their organization, such as MBTU's per $ of sale or transaction.
