New crop year reminders for Western producers and industry

WINNIPEG, July 17, 2013 /CNW/ - The Canadian Grain Commission reminds the grain industry and producers about grain grading changes that come into effect on August 1, 2013 in Western Canada.

Roughage tolerances for triticale and rye
Currently, commercial cleanliness requirements for Triticale, Canada (CAN) and Rye, Canada Western (CW) do not include tolerances for roughage. As recommended by the Western Standards Committee at its April 2013 meeting, the following roughage tolerance for exports of Canadian triticale and rye take effect in Western Canada as of August 1, 2013:

• Triticale, Canada (CAN) - 0.1% Total small seeds, attrition and roughage
• Rye, Canada Western (CW) - 0.1% Total small seeds, attrition and roughage

Moisture specifications for food barley
Currently, the moisture specification for dry grain for barley in the food class is 14.8% for both covered and hulless varieties. As recommended by the Western Standards Committee at its November 2012 meeting, the following moisture specifications for dry grain for Barley, Canada Western Food (CW) take effect on August 1, 2013:

• Food barley, covered - 13.5%
• Food barley, hulless - 14.0%

Sprouted tolerances in Canada Western Amber Durum wheat
As recommended by the Western Standards Committee at its November 2012 meeting, the following tolerances for sprouted, Wheat, Canada Western Amber Durum take effect August, 1, 2013:

Solin no longer an official grain
Canada Western Solin will be removed from the list of official grains of Canada and will no longer be regulated under the Canada Grain Act. As of August 1, 2013, there will no longer be a grade schedule or quality standards for solin, nor the right for producers to request subject to inspector's grade and dockage (a binding decision on grade and dockage) for solin deliveries. As well, deliveries of solin will not be covered by the Canadian Grain Commission's Payment Protection Program.

Cancellation of registration for grain varieties

Registration for Garnet, a wheat variety belonging to the Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS) class will be cancelled. Effective August 1, 2013, this variety will only be eligible for the grade Wheat, Canada Western Feed.

Registration for the following flaxseed varieties will be cancelled:

• CDC Mons
• CDC Normandy

Effective August 1, 2013, these varieties will only be eligible for the grade Flaxseed, 3 Canada Western/Canada Eastern.

Canada Western Red Winter wheat reclassification

Effective August 1, 2013, the following wheat varieties move from the Canada Western Red Winter (CWRW) class to the Canada Western General Purpose (CWGP) class:

• CDC Kestrel
• CDC Clair
• CDC Harrier
• CDC Raptor

CDC Falcon, currently a CWRW variety, is proposed to move to the CWGP class on August 1, 2014.

The Official Grain Grading Guide as of August 1, 2013 will be posted shortly before the start of the new crop year.

Producer car procedures
The Canadian Grain Commission also reminds producers to check the procedures related to using producer cars to ship grain as the procedures followed at unload have changed. Updated producer car information will be available at www.grainscanada.gc.ca on August 1, 2013.
