New Orleans Ranks As No. 1 City for Home Improvement in the US

Infogroup analyzes cities with highest concentrations of home improvement, lawn and garden businesses for summer renovations

OMAHA, Neb., May 1, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumers looking to renovate their homes this summer have the most options for home improvement businesses in New Orleans, according to data from leading business and analytics provider Infogroup. 

To determine the top U.S. cities for home improvement, Infogroup used its verified business database of more than 15 million records to identify which metro areas with more than 1 million in population have the highest concentration of businesses for home improvement projects. Businesses considered in the analysis included heating contractors, plumbing contractors, air conditioning contractors, painters, electric contractors, drywall contractors, floor laying contractors, roofing contractors, siding contractors, and patio and deck cleaning and restoration contractors. Additionally, Infogroup used its database to identify the top metro areas for lawn and garden projects considering the number of landscape designers, landscape contractors and garden centers.

Once compiled, cities were ranked by their concentration of businesses per 10,000 residents for both home improvement and lawn and garden businesses. Infogroup ranked the following as the top 10 cities for home improvement businesses and lawn and garden businesses:

With an average of 14 businesses per 10,000 residents, New Orleans tops the list with the highest concentration of home improvement businesses. Hartford, Conn., ranks as both the top city for lawn and garden businesses and the No. 2 city for home improvement businesses. Interestingly, 32 percent of all home improvement businesses and 31 percent of lawn and garden businesses are work at home compared to the national average of 9 percent.

Infogroup also analyzed the key demographic characteristics of households likely to do home improvement or lawn and garden projects. Households likely to do home improvement projects are 4.8 times more likely to have an estimated net worth of at least $274K, for example, and 2.4 times more likely to donate to a charitable cause when compared to households unlikely to take on home improvement projects. Additionally, households more likely to take on lawn and garden projects are 3.3 times more likely have an estimated net worth of at least $540K, 5.1 times more likely to be a religious donor, and 4.3 times more likely to be an SUV buyer than households unlikely to do lawn care projects.
