New Poll: Majority of Americans Want Congress to Pass USMCA

WASHINGTON, Feb. 26, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- American voters support Congress passing the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement by a nearly four-to-one margin, according to a poll released today by the Pass USMCA Coalition.

The national survey, conducted by Morning Consult, surveyed 1,995 people from January 29 to February 1, 2019. Survey results have a margin of error of +/- 2 percent.

The poll comes three months after President Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and former Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto signed USMCA. The 116th Congress is expected to vote on the agreement this year.

"Americans rely on strong North American trade relations for a stable workforce and economy," said former Congressman Joe Crowley, honorary co-chairman of the Pass USMCA Coalition. "USMCA will promote job growth across industries and expand opportunities for American workers."

The majority of voters (51 percent) polled want Congress to pass USMCA, compared to only 14 percent who oppose approval of the deal.

Voters support specific tenets of deal, including that the deal will:

• Give U.S. dairy farmers more opportunity to sell to Canadian consumers. Sixty percent of respondents say knowing this makes them more likely to support the effort.
• Strengthen intellectual property and patent protections for American medical innovations, such as medicines. Fifty-four percent of respondents say this provision makes them more likely to support USMCA.
• Require auto manufacturers to have a higher percentage of their parts made in the United States, Mexico, or Canada to qualify for lower import taxes. Fifty-two percent of Americans say knowing this increases their likelihood of supporting the agreement.

Half of voters (51 percent) favor Congress passing USMCA. Thirty-two percent of respondents "somewhat support" USMCA while 19 percent "strongly support" it. Ten percent of respondents "somewhat oppose" the deal while just four percent "strongly oppose" it.

"Voters understand that the deal protects American workers, manufacturers, farmers, and innovators," said Rick Dearborn, Pass USMCA Coalition's executive director.

"USMCA is a deal both Democrats and Republicans can get behind," added former Commerce secretary Gary Locke, honorary co-chairman of Pass USMCA. "The American public supports it. So should lawmakers."
