Price Transparency Background:

• More than 100 million Americans are in medical debt, which is the leading cause of personal bankruptcy in the United States.
• According to recent polling, more than nine out of ten of Americans support healthcare price transparency.
• Without prices, hospitals and insurers can charge whatever they want and do so with zero accountability. A recent report showed that prices vary by an average of 10 times for the same care within the same hospitals across different health plans and by an average of more than 30 times for the care at different hospitals within the same state.
• Prices protect people from these overcharges. With prices, patients can choose between a $300 MRI and a $3,000 MRI or between a $19,000 and $168,000 for knee replacement surgery.
• Without prices and without transparency, Americans are forced to make the decision to opt-out of necessary services and procedures that they need.
